Hot on the heels of the covers project released earlier this year, Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro return with their third original album, Perfect Times. The dozen tracks on featured include the A-sides of the Six Mocha Shots released over the second half of 2011 in addition to six previously unreleased titles, with all the songs on CD release for the first time.
There’s a really strong start to the album, kicking off the set with the thumping funk rock tune It Must Be You, and then moving on to two of the stronger singles from last year, Stompin’ Joe and the New Orleans-style funk of Lie On The Side, then followed by the killer Atmos 2000, which has all the makings of a modern deep funk classic.
After this high octane-fuelled start the band then take the tempo down slightly with the fantastic mellow cosmic funk of Mud City, showing another aspect of their sound. This is followed by the southern-fried boogie of What Satisfies You If You Can’t Get Enough has something of a rockier vibe to it ~ imagine ZZ Top jamming with early seventies Kool & The Gang.
Other high points include Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and the closing track Yesterday’s Delight, which has an infectious main riff that has a ring of familiarity to it from the first listen. Leave this last tune playing for a minute or so after the music fades out and you have an untitled hidden track as a bonus.
Another strong set from one of Japan’s premier funk acts, Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro’s new album does not disappoint. Perfect times indeed.

Looking for unmixed Jerry Butler ‘mechanical man’. Would love it in a comp but I can only find it mixed. Thanks.
